Inrush Current Limitation

The Ultimate Inrush Current Limiting Solution

The VIZIMAX SynchroTeq is an advanced circuit breaker controler for ultimate limitation of inrush currents produced by power transformers’ energization.

SynchroTeq is suitable for single-pole operated (Independent Pole Operated) and three-pole operated (Gang Operated) circuit breakers in new or existing installations. SynchroTeq is a modular solution for all circuit breakers (HV & MV), regardless of their manufacturer.

The SynchroTeq MVX is the most compact unit designed for MV switchgears applied to power transformer energization.

Power Factor Correction

The Oil & Gas industry is a heavy consumer of reactive power because of its use of a large number of pumps, recompressors and other heavy equipment. Control reactive power allows voltage fluctuations limitation, power factor management and electricity bills limitation. Companies require FACTS to regulate reactive power balance; it corrects voltage fluctuations, reduces electricity bills and meets Utility Grid Code requirements.

Equipment operated within FACTS relies on medium and high voltage circuit breakers to energize or de-energize capacitor banks, shunt reactors, filters, SVC, STATCOM, etc. However, an uncontrolled or random load switching operation causes voltage disturbances and inrush currents. These may damage circuit breakers and equipment within a substation, alter power quality and lead to equipment failure or to blackouts.

The SynchroTeq controlled switching device improves reliability and stability of FACTS solutions: while switching loads, it operates circuit breakers at the optimal moment to prevent transients such as inrush currents and voltage disturbances. Thanks to its fast switching technology, the SynchroTeq helps FACTS quickly adjust the power factor.

Grid Code Compliance

As a large electricity consumer and producer, the Oil & Gas industry has to meet electric Utility Grid Code requirements when connecting onshore or offshore extraction sites, refineries and oil or gas power plants to the distribution or transmission network.
The grid code relies on the reduction of a rapid voltage change. It specifies that usually a voltage change has to be no greater than 3% and 5% for transmission and distribution networks, respectively. In this regard, power transformers become a mission critical asset.

One of the main causes of voltage disturbances is the energization of a power transformer. In fact, uncontrolled power transformer energization generates voltage disturbances and inrush currents that can reach up to 12 times the rated current. The inrush current may cause nuisance tripping of the station protection or may induce voltage dips that go over the utility’s limits. Both cases require mitigation strategies.

This is when the SynchroTeq controlled switching device becomes necessity, since it is capable of mitigating or completely eliminating inrush currents caused by transformer core flux saturation.

Industrial Automation

Substation automation in the Oil & Gas industry requires rugged, reliable and field upgradable automation products. VIZIMAX develops innovative “Internet of Things” solutions to modernize existing assets and provides distributed intelligence throughout the whole infrastructure. Built-in with an IEC 61131-3 compliant automation system, RightWON offers protocol conversion, remote management and telecommunication features.

The RightWON product line provides a wide range of solutions for Oil & Gas industry leaders: substation automation, data collection, local HMI capabilities, bi-directional interface between substation data and industrial SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems.
